This is such a lazy car. Instead of having an interesting drive train, it’s basically an M5 in drag, with a 50, 000 euro bump in price at least in Spain.
The 8er was a bonkers coupe; it competed with the S class coupes of it’s time. But this? It’s not as insane as the S class coupe. Really, it’s just a good reason for Mercedes to finally install the AMG motor on the E class coupe; and kill BMW in sales.
I really like it, but I can’t let go of the laziness
. Honestly the best M cars on sale right now are the X3 M and the M2 comp. Those at least are a bit more creative and properly stupid.

like most of BMW’s lineup, overpriced and ugly

The rear reminds me of a Q60 coupe.
Not a fan of the car.

except obviously the 2er active tourer

I really like it, though it looks bigger than it is.

On the topic of egregious overpricing, the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 starts at $92,000 CAD, the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-door starts at $115,000 ($23,000 more) and has different front and rear fascias on the same body.
The worst is probably the E63 S AMG ($117,000 CAD base) to the AMG-GT 63 S 4-door ($177,500 base). That’s $60,500, mostly for a different body.

I think there’s more behind it, this M8 is a comp pack, while the standard M5 isn’t, and this has carbon brakes, the M5 doesn’t have them standard. Already that reduces the gap to 30,000 euros. Considering other equipment
it might have standard I doubt the difference ends up being so egregious

AMG-GT 63 S 4-door is a thing that shouldn’t exist.

S uper nice car, but the profile looks an awful lot like a track pack Mustang - agree, they may not have been quite daring enough on the styling. Wonder if Alpina will do a version?

Alpina could make the car BMW should’ve made; a real S63 competitor. Less aggressive than a regular M but with the same amount of power

Love the gran coupe 8 series. But agreed M8 could be way better. They could have stuffed the v12 N74B66TU in it and bumped the boost to closer to 700hp

+1 on the Mustang take.

Maybe I'm just old now, but after having owned several BMWs in the past, the only one that holds much interest for me these days is the active tourer...

T hey could just stripped out the electric motor and battery pack and shoved a bigger gasoline engine into the i8 and that would still be better than this.

Same motor as the M4; make it a proper 911 competitor.

It’s not a different body, it’s a significantly different suspension design. You don’t get rear wheel steering in the E or CLS at all.
Also the 8 series of the 90s was no different. Cars like this are overpriced it’s the name of the game
But I’m really curious if you’ve ever driven an old 8 series cause it’s exaclty as you describe the new one. The 840 is an M60 pulled straight from the 540and the 850 had the v12 from the 7 series. The interior was largely similar to other 90sBMWs and a lot of the front suspension components are shared or just slight upgrades that bolt directly on to an e34 5 series. Seems like some rose tinted glasses here

When the i8 first came out my first thought was to shove in the powert rain of the M6 into the back. Call it the M1 and then they could pretty much print money. Instead we get a somewhat interesting but mostly meh car.

i mean the M6 was also the M5 in drag

All I see are wheels that I need for my Firebird.

I suppose part of your reply was meant to be directed at the OP, I refrained from commenting on the new M8, or any 8 series.
While I know overpricing is rampant, I have to say that I disapprove of excessive costs (a Miata RF starts at $40,000 CAD!).
Curious to know if the AMG-GT 53 has rear wheel steering as an option, the reviews I looked at only focused on the 63 and 63s.

I know the old 8er was a bit of a parts special
. Really I just think BMW could’ve driven more into the S class coupe territory, this car is not “fancy” enough as is, and it really looks like a replacement to the 6er coupe rather than a competitor to the S coupe.
That’s what I meant, really.
